Field to Canvas: The Expressive Landscape in Oils with Dr. Julie Ashlock
Tuesdays, April, 21, 28, May 5: 6:30-8:30 pm
Capture the spirit of the outdoors! In 3 sessions, we move from life-based observational sketching to expressive oil painting. This class isn't about perfect replication; it’s about capturing the essence of the experience. Learn to simplify shapes, play with bold color and find the soul of your subject through guided exercises. Focus on the experience of being in nature rather than just the details, translating sketches done “in the field” into personal, bold studio pieces that are uniquely yours. Explore techniques for quick, observational sketching to capture light, mood and movement; simplify the scene by stripping away the clutter of a landscape to find its core "essence”; practice oil painting fundamentals to master the buttery texture of oils through color mixing, use of mediums, brushes and knives; use your initial inspirations to create a finished, semi-abstracted painting. Whether a beginner looking for a foundation or an intermediate painter wanting to loosen up your style, come ready to play with paint and leave with a piece that feels like a memory on canvas. See below for the supply list.
