Turkish Paper Marbling with Vesile Yilmaz
Saturday, February 26: 11 am-3 pm
Come explore Ebru, the ancient art of Turkish paper marbling! Ebru can be described as the therapeutic art form of painting on water. Patterns are made by dispersing rich earth pigments with horse-hair and rosewood brushes upon the surface of a thickened liquid. The feast for the eye starts when the droplets expand in mesmerizing circular shapes. During this course, students gain hands-on experience while learning preparation of the dyes and bath and techniques with special tools of the trade such as natural earth pigments, ox-gall, and carrageenan (all are non-toxic). Students will learn the history and cultural significance of this art form.
Students focus on various traditional designs, along with time for personal explorations to produce their one-of-a-kind marbled designs. Ebru paper is commonly used for bookbinding and calligraphy, or it can be incorporated into collage, scrapbooking, art journaling or can be framed as artwork. No previous experience is required; all skill levels are welcome. All tools and supplies are included in the cost of workshop.
