Introductory Cold Wax and Oil with Micki High
Thursday & Friday, January 8 & 9: 9 am-12 pm
Join us for a two-day, hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of abstract painting using oil and cold wax. Designed for beginners and those looking to deepen their practice, this workshop offers guided instruction, live demonstrations and plenty of studio time to explore techniques and tools. Participants will start with intuitive mark-making and build layers using various tools to manipulate the wax/oil mixture. Micki will cover key concepts such as wax-to-oil ratios, managing drying times and using techniques like reduction and excavation to create rich textures and depth. She believes that it is with good understanding of how colors work together that we can create subtle and sophisticated tints and shades. She will guide us in a simple approach to color by developing a spectrum of values with neutrals and then creating harmonious palettes. Working on 2 to 3 paintings at once throughout the workshop, allows students greater freedom and experimentation. While the emphasis is on abstraction, participants are encouraged to incorporate elements of realism based on their own vision and goals. Through exploration, students will learn how to identify emerging subject matter in their work and refine it using tools suited for dry surface manipulation. All materials are provided; students only need to bring an apron, roll of paper towel and landscape photo references. A separate $45 supply fee is due to instructor at the start of class.
