Culture-Inspired Jewelry with Angela Hamilton

Tuesdays, May 14, 21, 28, June 4: 6-8 pm

In this class series, students will learn about the history of jewelry in different cultures and render jewelry inspired by those cultures. What is behind the choices to wear certain jewelry and clothing? What was the symbolism and meaning behind the materials? Through deeper understanding, we learn to appreciate cultural artifacts and are proudly able to exhibit beautiful works of wearable art. Grab your passport, pack an open mind, enthusiasm and …your CREATIVITY! The first leg of our travels is Egypt. Learn about the beautiful jewelry that adorned Cleopatra, Nefertiti and King Tut and create wire-wrapped pieces inspired by them. Next, get your passport stamped in Africa, where we will explore the beautiful colors and style of the Ghanaians and create statement pieces with a burst of color worn by women and men. Finally, we return home to study healing stones, learn why turquoise is used in most Native American jewelry and create pieces of inspiration. All tools and supplies are included in the class fee; a separate materials fee of $10 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.
